Getting to your ideal weight is a goal that everyone should aspire to achieve. Not only would it make you look good, feel better physically and emotionally — it also dramatically raises your chances of living a long and healthy life.
Losing weight is not an easy thing to do, but here are four tips from Better You By Design to get you started.
1. Eat healthier food.
Get a book or an ebook that can guide you on what types of food you should eat. Weight loss is more strongly determined by diet than exercise, and if you can’t control your portions — at least eat healthier food. Cut back on fast food and sodas, and try to eat home-cooked meals more.
2. Control your portions.
Once you start to eat healthier, it’s a good idea to start cutting your portion size. You don’t need to count every calorie, but you should try to eat a little less than you did a month or two ago. Eat slowly and give your body a chance to feel full.
The Japanese practice something called “Hara Hachi Bu” — where they stop eating when they feel 80 percent full. Considering that Japan has the most number of people living over 100 years, we probably could learn a thing or two from them.
3. Do a little cardio.
Get your heart pumping and sweat it out. Exercise come in many forms — walking, cycling, sports activities, gardening and even everyday chores. Even if you regularly exercise just for one day in a week — you dramatically reduce your risks of cancer and cardiovascular problems.
4. Keep it cool.
If you can’t find time to heat it up by exercising or lifting weights — what you can do is turn the thermostat down. Feeling cold forces your body to burn calories at a faster rate to maintain your optimal core temperature.
Taking steps to lose weight is a great goal. You might find it hard at first — but seeing the numbers on the scale drop can give you a sense of fulfillment, joy and a healthier life.
